Developing Creative Habits

Have you ever seen an artist grow and wonder how they did that?

I am going to guess that they established a creative habit. Sometimes a creative practice is every day and sometimes it is a weekend warrior type of practice.

When I started my daily practice I used a Tiny Adventures Journal with the travel kit. Wherever I went that kit was with me. If I was going to the post office it would be in my bag. If I sat on the couch with my husband the kit was with me. When I went to bed at night it was with me. You get the idea, I took it with me EVERYWHERE. I was pleasantly surprised at how often I was creating when I did that.

Working small allowed me to create quick little pieces that I could actually complete.

Think Small

So many times we think so big. Big pieces, big time, many supplies. That is too much for daily practice. Think smaller. Work on smaller pieces and limit your daily practice to 5-10 minutes. Daily practice is the act of showing up.

You might ask, “Does this even benefit my art practice?'“ Yes, it does. Any time using your creativity is helping your skill level and it is time that you are giving to yourself.

Work in Batches

Sometimes I am only in the mood to make background papers. So I will just add marks to my background papers, layer paint, or start dying the pages. Later when I am ready to dive into a project I am so grateful I did this. In my class, Foundations is all about background papers. I also have a tutorial I will include here.

Sometimes I sit at the typewriter and type out quotes, words, and phrases for later use. Other times I paint flowers or draw faces. The point is that I spend a few minutes creating.

Schedule Creative Time

Schedule time in your day/week to create. Even if it is only five minutes, schedule it and honor that time you have set aside.

If you have kids, schedule something special for them to do. Even if you have a project for them that does not require your assistance. Schedule durning nap time or play dates. The point is make it happen.
