Staying Present in Your Art Practice

Staying present in your art practice is such a great way to listen to your intuition and create pieces that literally feed your soul. I have little rituals that I do when I set down to create and I really have found this is helpful for keeping me present in my practice.

  1. Gather supplies—gather anything you would like to create so that you do not have to stop in the middle of your practice to find a supply. I make sure I have clean water and a fresh palette ready to go. Nothing breaks my flow like no water to clean my brushes.

  2. Grab a drink and a special treat. I like to have herbal tea and a plate of veggies to snack on. I always have one piece of Italian chocolate and one ginger chew. I always have my water bottle filled and close by.

  3. Light a candle or turn on your diffuser with your favorite scent.

  4. Before you begin stretching your hands, shoulder, and neck. Doing this before you start allows you to stay in the creative zone longer without getting stiff. If I am sitting longer than an hour I will stretch again. I try to do this about every hour.

  5. I begin by taking a few deep slow breaths. Breathing really helps connect us to the present moment. Clearing your thoughts of yesterday, tomorrow, and staying here and now.

  6. I set an intention before I start. Sometimes I will create a little vignette that has my intention written out and keep it close by.

  7. Dive in. Start creating and be kind to yourself.

Creativity has always been a large part of my life. I believe that everyone is a creative, some people just have not discovered their passion yet. My goal is to share the message, “Go Forth and Create!”

Mixed media is my love. I thrive on the freedom of working in any medium I want and combining watercolor, ink, acrylics, fabrics-everything is fair game.

Living in Alaska, I am surrounded by beauty. I find the scenery and the people equally inspiring. the world is endlessly providing inspiration and my mission is to take full advantage. My favorites include color, nature, family, books, people and so much more.
