Travel Journaling: A Step-by-Step Guide

Traveling is one of life’s greatest joys, and capturing those moments in a travel journal transforms them into tangible memories. Whether you’re an experienced journal keeper or new to this creative process, travel journaling allows you to document your adventures while embracing your artistic side. Here’s a guide to help you create a travel journal that not only tells your story but also becomes a cherished keepsake.

1. Choose Your Journal

The first step is finding a journal that suits your style and purpose. Here are a few tips:

  • Size: A smaller journal is easy to carry, but a larger one gives you more space to create.

  • Paper Quality: Opt for thicker paper if you plan to use watercolors, collages, or heavy ink.

  • Design: A blank or grid layout provides flexibility for sketches, writing, and layouts.

2. Gather Your Supplies

Having a travel kit ready makes journaling on the go effortless. Consider packing:

  • Put Together a Kit: Select a case, bag, or small box of the size you want to gather your supplies in. Having this established first is helpful.

  • Writing Tools: Pens, pencils, and markers in your favorite colors.

  • Art Supplies: Watercolors, travel brushes, washi tape, and glue sticks.

  • Ephemera: Collect ticket stubs, postcards, maps, and receipts to include in your journal.

  • Storage: A small pouch to keep everything organized.

3. Document Your Journey

While traveling, take moments to reflect and record your experiences. Here are ways to fill your pages:

  • Sketch or Paint: Capture landscapes, buildings, or unique items you encounter.

  • Write: Jot down your thoughts, observations, and conversations that made an impact.

  • Collage: Incorporate found items like pressed flowers, restaurant menus, and boarding passes. I collected a botanical from each place we traveled when I was in Europe and I brought them home in a book, pressed between the pages.

  • Photography: Print small photos to enhance your pages. I created a dropbox folder for each of my travels and inside the folders I create sub-folders and upload the photos at the end of each day. It really helped me keep track of my memories when I was not able to journal daily.

4. Create Daily Themes

Organizing your entries by day or theme can bring structure to your journal. Some ideas include:

  • Day-by-Day: Summarize each day’s highlights with bullet points or paragraphs.

  • Area-by-Area: I found this helpful when we traveled different places and sometimes several areas in one day.

5. Add Personal Touches

Make your travel journal uniquely yours with creative embellishments:

  • Quotes and Reflections: Include meaningful quotes or personal insights. I like to write quotes from people in my group. People say the most interesting and sometimes funny things.

  • Maps: Highlight routes you’ve traveled or places you’ve visited.

  • Stamps and Stickers: Use local postage stamps or stickers for a regional flair.

6. Practice Gratitude

End each entry by writing something you’re grateful for. This practice enhances your connection to the journey and leaves your journal with a positive note.

7. Embrace Imperfection

Your journal doesn’t have to be perfect. Scribbles, smudges, and rough sketches add authenticity and charm. Remember, it’s about capturing memories, not creating a masterpiece.

8. Reflect and Share

Once your journey ends, revisit your journal to relive the memories. You might even share it with friends or family or use it as inspiration for future creative projects.

Final Thoughts

Travel journaling is a delightful way to preserve your adventures and express your creativity. Whether you’re exploring faraway places or discovering local gems, your journal becomes a window into your unique experiences. So pack your supplies, open your heart, and let your travels inspire you!
