10 Writing Prompts for Grief

  1. Write a letter to your loved one – Share with them the things you didn’t get to say, updates about your life, or how much they meant to you. Let your words flow naturally.

  2. Explore the impact they had on your life – How did knowing them change you? What qualities or passions did they inspire in you? Honor their legacy by reflecting on the gifts they left behind.

  3. Describe the moments that are hardest without them – What daily routines, milestones, or quiet moments feel different now? Allow yourself to express the depth of these changes.

  4. Reflect on a lesson they taught you – What life lessons or values did they instill in you? Write about how you can carry these forward in your own life.

  5. Write about a place that reminds you of them – Whether it’s their home, a favorite spot, or somewhere you shared a memorable day, describe this place in detail and how it connects you to their memory.

  6. Imagine them as a source of comfort – If they could see you now, what words of encouragement or love might they offer? Write these down as if they were speaking directly to you.

  7. Describe your emotions without judgment – Grief is complex and layered. Write openly about the waves of emotions—anger, sadness, confusion, or even joy—without trying to fix or understand them all.

  8. Write about the ways you’re honoring their memory – Whether it’s a tradition, a project, or a simple gesture, explore how these acts help you keep their memory alive.

  9. Envision your future with their love guiding you – How can you carry forward their love and influence as you navigate life’s challenges and joys? Write about the strength they give you, even in their absence.

  10. Describe a cherished memory with your loved one – What was the day like? How did it feel to be with them in that moment? Allow yourself to relive the joy, and savor the small details.
